Saving Money on Back to School in Covid Times

Saving Money on Back to School in Covid Times

Sep 1, 2020

There are plenty of ways to save on back to school, no matter how big or small your budget is. You can buy all the essentials for your kids without breaking the bank. Here are some easy ways to save money on back to school in Covid times.

Make a List Ahead of Time

If you’re like a lot of parents, you probably want to get back to school shopping out of the way right away. You may have even started your back to school shopping before the last day of school has happened in June! While that may seem like a good plan, the risk to that is that you could end up buying stuff that your kids won’t need. It helps to wait until your children’s teachers give you a list of must-have items for the year.

It's also helpful to plan ahead before you head to the stores. That means making a list. When you have a list, you can get in and out of stores without spending a lot of time there. Because of the pandemic, most Canadians don’t want to browse right now in stores anyways. It also helps to prevent impulse buys.

For that reason, you might want to consider buying all your back to school items at a single store. You can still shop around, but for any items you don’t find at the store, consider buying them online. That way you won’t go to more stores than you need to, reducing the health risk for you and your family.

Benefit from Free Shipping

Online shopping was popular with Canadians before the pandemic but has become even more popular since March. You can buy what you need without leaving your couch and can avoid the long line ups. What’s not to love?

When buying online, the cost of shipping can really add up, so be on the lookout for deals on shipping. A lot of retailers offer free shipping when you surpass a certain amount.

If you can’t quite meet the minimum amount for free shipping, get creative. Maybe you can combine the back to school spend with another family. When you do that, you can still buy everything that you need and enjoy free shipping, too. It’s a win-win situation.

Try to Pick Up Used

Before visiting the World Wide Web or stores, see if you can pick up some used items for your kids. Clothes are a great item to buy used. Brand new clothes can cost a lot. If you can find people selling second-hand clothing in decent shape, you can really save yourself a bundle. Just be sure to wash anything you buy second-hand thoroughly to be on the safe side.

Upsize Your Children’s Clothing

On the topic of clothing, sometimes it’s a good idea to buy a larger size. If you’re handy with your sewing machine, it will only take you a few minutes to hem pants and cuff shirts. You can extend the life of clothing by a year or two at a time when kids seem to grow so quickly. By doing this consistently with clothing, you can really stretch your clothing dollars a lot further.

Avoid the Brand Names When Possible

Your children may want brand names on everything but buying brand name can cost two to three times more than generic brands. For that reason, it’s a good idea to buy no name when possible. While your kids may not be too keen on no name clothing and shoes, do you really need brand name pencil crayons? Pick your battles and figure out when you can get away with just buying generic brands and save money at a time when money may be tight.

Wishing your family and you a happy and healthy school year ahead!
